My name is Dina von Hahn and I teach Political Science, History, and Women’s Studies in the University Credit program at Coast Mountain College. I hold a Master of Arts degree in Humanities from California State University (2001), a credential I completed entirely through distance learning,  while also working and parenting a pre-school child. Prior to that I earned a Professional Diploma in Education (PBD) from Simon Fraser University, as well as completing their Professional Diploma Program in Education to earn my k-12 BC Teaching Certificate, which I still hold. My first post-secondary credential was a BA in Political Science from the University of Victoria (1986), where I also participated in the Creative Writing Co-op program, which is what first brought me to the north to work at newspapers in Whitehorse, Smithers, and Prince Rupert. When I left journalism in 1990 I was working for CBC Radio.

What I love the most about teaching is learning from my students! As well, it is extremely satisfying to see students develop in their personal and professional lives. I have encountered so many former students working in my children’s schools, at our Terrace hospital, and in other roles where they are giving back to the communities that nurtured them. I encourage students to succeed by dreaming big and not being afraid to take on challenges! My favourite place to spend time in our region is the picnic site at Lakelese Lake in the summer. Since I have also taught many English courses since starting work here in 1993, many people are surprised to learn that English is not my first language.
