Marine Emergency Duties - A3 (MED-A3)
MED-A3 is a basic personal safety training certificate course mandatory for persons working as crew members of fishing vessels or small commercial vessels shorter than 12 metres in length, operating no more than 25 miles offshore. Transport Canada requirements state that every member of the complement of a ship shall, before the member has completed six months on board ships, obtain a certificate of member’s successful completion of training at a recognized institution in marine emergency duties with respect to basic safety.
According to the Marine Personnel Regulations, all non-passengers on board a commercial vessel must have a valid Marine Emergency Duties certificate prior to acquiring a total of 6 months of sea service. More information on the requirements for MED can be found on the Transport Canada website here: http://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/regulations/SOR-2007-115/page-31.html#h-95
