MFA Setup Guide
Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) adds an extra layer of security to your account by requiring a second form of verification, such as a code sent to your phone, in addition to your password. Once MFA is set up, you can securely reset or change your password on your own without needing to contact the helpdesk or submit a support ticket.
Step 1
Sign in to Microsoft 365 and navigate to https://myaccount.microsoft.com, then click on “Security info.”
Step 2
Click on “Add sign-in method.”
Step 3
From the options displayed on the screen, select “Microsoft Authenticator.”
Note: While Microsoft 365 supports multiple MFA methods, this guide covers only the Microsoft Authenticator app. Students may choose to use other supported authentication methods; however, Coast Mountain College support for MFA is limited to Microsoft Authenticator. Support resources and troubleshooting assistance are available only for Microsoft Authenticator.
Step 4
A prompt will appear instructing you to install the Microsoft Authenticator app on your device if it is not already installed.
Step 5
On your device:
- If you are using an Apple (iOS) device, open the App Store, search for “Microsoft Authenticator”, and install the app.
- If you are using an Android device, open the Google Play Store, search for “Microsoft Authenticator” and install the app.
Step 6
After installing the app on your phone, return to your browser and click “Next” twice.
Step 7
Open the Microsoft Authenticator app on your phone and select “Scan QR code.” You may be prompted to grant permission for the app to access your phone’s camera – select “Allow.” Once permission is granted, use your phone to scan the QR code displayed on your browser screen.
Step 8
After scanning the QR code, your account will be successfully registered in the Authenticator app and it should appear as shown below.
Step 9
On the browser screen, click “Next.”
Step 10
A prompt will appear asking you to enter the 6-digit code from the Microsoft Authenticator app. Enter the code shown and select “Next.”
Step 11
After clicking “Next,” the system will verify the code. Once verified successfully, a confirmation message will appear, and the Microsoft Authenticator app will be registered as a sign-in method for your account.
Note: After registration, you will be prompted to enter your password during sign-in, followed by a verification step using the Microsoft Authenticator app
